In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
