Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels down to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
